Neocloud IPO wave collides with a skeptical debt market
Nscale filed to go public at a $35B valuation on Microsoft and Anthropic contracts, and Firmus Grid tried to list at $30B with only $59M revenue and 46MW of a 912MW pipeline delivered. DayOne Data Centers filed on Nasdaq (DODC) with four bulge-bracket underwriters. At the same time CoreWeave's bonds traded at distress levels and still yield 15%, and it was called the 'canary in the coal mine' of the AI trade. Oracle, Nebius and Dell also fell on tech-debt worries, so the public window is open but being priced on delivered megawatts rather than promised ones.
Nvidia leads with 50 deals among top investors, far ahead of Coatue (12) and Benchmark (11). Newcomer describes Jensen Huang as deeply invested in CoreWeave and Firmus, while Nebius, Nscale and Firmus run Nvidia-backed, debt-financed projects alongside Apollo and Blackstone. Nvidia's reported $30B Reflection deal, its French startup investments and its $2B European pledge extend that role across the stack.
Why it matters · Supplier-as-investor financing concentrates risk: a stumble at one neocloud can hit Nvidia's demand pipeline and its balance sheet at once.
Apollo and Blackstone, which appears among the top investors with 10 deals, provide the debt behind neocloud capacity, and Blackstone's Helix vehicle is cited as an IPO catalyst. The stage mix shows $20B in Series D+ rounds and a large 'unknown' bucket of $53.7B, which fits debt and infrastructure-style financing rather than classic venture. Structured terms, like Thrive's call option on OpenAI, are spreading to the top of the market.
Why it matters · Capital is shifting from equity to structured and credit instruments, which raises the cost of capital for any operator that misses its ramp targets.
Modal has crossed $300M ARR, and Fireworks, Baseten and Deep Infra sell inference and model-serving layers on top of rented compute. Fireworks and Baseten are also customers of Harmonic's Scout platform. Context.dev's GPU Terminal, which aggregates GPU rental prices, shows that compute is being commoditized and shopped on price.
Why it matters · Value is accruing to software layers that abstract away GPU supply, while raw capacity providers face price transparency and margin pressure.
Anthropic's growth, with Claude Code credited for a 10x revenue increase, plus Microsoft contracts underpin Nscale, and Fluidstack serves as the compute site for Anthropic's gigawatt-scale expansion. xAI targets 10GW by the end of 2027 and is raising another $40B, while Meta runs heavily on Nvidia compute. Vertically integrated players like Google also rent compute they once only used internally.
Why it matters · A handful of lab customers drive the demand curve, so contract concentration is the key diligence risk for every GPU cloud.
