Eugen Bleuler

Eugen Bleuler (1857–1939) was a Swiss psychiatrist who served as professor of psychiatry at the University of Zurich and director of the Burghölzli Asylum from 1898 to 1927. He is best known for introducing the term "schizophrenia" in 1908 to describe the disorder previously known as dementia praecox, and for identifying core symptoms including loosening of associations, disturbances of affectivity, ambivalence, and autism. He also coined several other psychiatric terms including schizoid, autism, depth psychology, and ambivalence, and is recognized as an early proponent of a bio-psychosocial model of mental illness.
