Ed Thorp

Edward O. Thorp is an American mathematics professor, author, and hedge fund manager who currently serves as President of Edward O. Thorp & Associates in Newport Beach, California. He is best known for mathematically proving that the house advantage in blackjack could be overcome through card-counting, detailed in his bestselling book Beat the Dealer, and for pioneering quantitative investment techniques in the financial markets. He co-authored Beat the Market in 1967 and launched the market-neutral hedge fund Princeton Newport Partners in 1969, earning him the reputation as the Godfather of Quants.
