Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812–1883) was an American politician who served as vice president of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. He is best known for his Cornerstone Speech of March 1861, in which he declared that the Confederacy was founded on the principle that the negro is not equal to the white man and that slavery was the natural condition of Black people. He later served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as governor of Georgia, dying in office in 1883.
