Pieter Abbeel is a professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at UC Berkeley, where he directs the Berkeley Robot Learning Lab and co-directs the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research Lab. He is currently an Amazon Scholar, having joined Amazon in 2024 when it licensed Covariant's robotics foundation models. He is best known for his pioneering research applying machine learning to robotics, including foundational work in deep reinforcement learning, imitation learning, and domain randomization. He co-founded Covariant, Gradescope, and Berkeley Open Arms, and has advised numerous prominent AI researchers including Sergey Levine, John Schulman, and Chelsea Finn.
