Donald A. Henderson

D. A. Henderson was an American physician and public health leader who directed the World Health Organization's global smallpox eradication campaign from 1966 to 1977, achieving the complete worldwide elimination of the disease. He served as dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health from 1977 to 1990 and later as founding director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies. He died on August 19, 2016, at the age of 87.
