Andrey Nikolaevich Kolmogorov (1903–1987) was a Soviet mathematician at Moscow State University who is widely regarded as the founder of modern probability theory through his 1933 axiomatic framework. He is also known for fundamental contributions to topology, turbulence, classical mechanics, and algorithmic information theory, the last of which gave rise to the concept known as Kolmogorov complexity. He served as head of several departments at Moscow State University and was elected a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1939.
