Hugh Lowell Montgomery is an American mathematician and professor emeritus at the University of Michigan. He is best known for his work in analytic number theory, particularly Montgomery's pair correlation conjecture concerning the statistical distribution of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function, as well as his development of large sieve methods. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1972 under the supervision of Harold Davenport and joined the University of Michigan faculty the same year. He is a recipient of the Adams Prize and the Salem Prize, and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
