J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904–1967) was an American theoretical physicist who served as director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project, overseeing the development of the first nuclear weapons. He is widely known as the father of the atomic bomb for his role in the successful Trinity test on July 16, 1945. After the war, he chaired the Atomic Energy Commission's General Advisory Committee and directed the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1947 to 1966. He died of throat cancer in 1967, and his 1954 security clearance revocation was posthumously vacated in 2022.
