Noam Shazeer

Noam Shazeer is an American computer scientist and entrepreneur known for his foundational contributions to artificial intelligence, particularly as a lead author of the 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need," which introduced the transformer architecture. He joined Google in 2000, where he worked on spelling correction and later co-developed the Meena chatbot before leaving in 2021 to found Character.AI. He returned to Google in August 2024 as VP of Engineering and co-lead of the Gemini AI project as part of a licensing deal, and in June 2026 announced his departure to join OpenAI. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2026.
