He left his full-time role at Microsoft in 1983 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, retaining his shares and becoming a billionaire when the company went public. Allen founded Vulcan Inc. in 1986 to manage his investments and philanthropic efforts, and established several research institutes including the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence.
