1. Key Themes

Theme: Open-source AI is the under-appreciated safety risk, and a monitoring/platform approach may be needed

Open-source models can't be monitored, unlike closed frontier labs

Khosla argues the policy conversation is focused on the wrong models.

"The most interesting risk in AI is not the OpenAI and Anthropic models. It's open-source models. They're way more dangerous because they can't be monitored."

Closed platforms have misuse detection; open-source has none

"You go into Astra and try to do something like design an explosive or virus, they immediately know it. If you're doing it with Qwen, nobody knows it. Nobody is even monitoring. I don't know if this nuance has really come across."

Proposed policy: allow open-source, but require monitored platforms

"Open-source should be allowed to run, but it should run on known platforms that can monitor what it's being used for, in the U.S. at least."

Theme: AI power demand is a near-term problem but a long-term catalyst for clean energy

AI demand finally creates "nonlinear" demand for next-gen energy

"Yes, energy use is a problem. But it has spurred so much energy investment in things like fusion and super-hot geothermal. We're going to get a lot more clean energy sources because the demand finally is there for nonlinear growth."

The counterfactual is coal

"Otherwise it's all met by coal plants and nobody's shutting down coal plants, no matter what the environmentalists or I say."

Defined time horizon for the pain

"Is this a problem between now and 2030? Yes. Is it a problem in 2035? No."

Theme: Consumer AI agents will be won on business-model alignment and trust

Trust is a function of incentive alignment, not incumbency

"Do you trust Facebook? Would you give them your credit card information? The question will be if the business model is aligned with the consumer or not."

The large opportunity: an agent that represents the consumer against marketers

"I said several years ago that a personal agent for consumers is one of the largest opportunities if they truly represent the consumer against the onslaught of marketers that are trying to get consumers to do things, buy things, read things, and believe things."

Theme: Private equity is breaking up large take-privates to realize sum-of-the-parts value

Sycamore is moving quickly to dismantle Walgreens Boots Alliance

"Sycamore isn't wasting any time breaking up the Walgreens Boots Alliance, believing that it's worth less than the sum of its parts."

Early return and a refocus on the U.S. business

"Selling Boots at the price being discussed would be an early win for Sycamore, which is poised to make a sizable return on the sale. It would also allow the firm to focus on reviving Walgreen's U.S. operations."

The same logic shows up elsewhere in the issue: Madison Square Garden Sports "plans to split the NY Knicks and NY Rangers into a pair of independent, publicly traded companies."

Theme: Capital is concentrating in AI infrastructure and "agentic" vertical software, with large private-market valuations and liquidity

AI-infrastructure rounds are large

"GMI Cloud, a Mountain View, Calif.-based provider of GPU infrastructure and inference services, raised $223m in Series B funding... The company also secured a $445m credit facility led by CTBC."

"CScale, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based optical interconnect developer, raised $145m in Series C funding from Atreides Management, Valor Equity Partners, Premji Invest, Sutter Hill Ventures, Maverick Silicon, Nvidia, and Intel Capital."

"Agentic" is now a standard descriptor across verticals

"Flow Engineering, an agentic platform for hardware development, raised $50m in Series B funding at a $750m valuation."

"Doxx, a Miami-based private agentic defined networking platform, raised $38m in Series A funding."

Employee liquidity at mega-valuations

"ElevenLabs, a London-based AI voice startup, completed a $300m employee tender offer at a $22b valuation."

2. Contrarian Perspectives

Open-source AI, not frontier labs, is the real danger, which cuts against the open-source-as-democratizing narrative

Khosla's view inverts the common framing that closed labs are the main risk. His reasoning is about observability rather than capability.

"They're way more dangerous because they can't be monitored."

He preempts the "talking your book" or regulatory-capture critique, which is the obvious objection given his OpenAI stake:

"Bullshit. They can say that. They can say everyone is greedy and don't care about what happens to the planet. But much of my life has been about doing things that are impactful for the climate, and I tell my LPs that I care about impact more than I care about profits — even though we've delivered a lot of profits to them."

AI's energy demand is a net positive for climate

Rather than treating AI power use as in tension with climate goals, Khosla argues it is what finally creates the demand pull for frontier clean energy.

"We're going to get a lot more clean energy sources because the demand finally is there for nonlinear growth. Otherwise it's all met by coal plants and nobody's shutting down coal plants, no matter what the environmentalists or I say."

Incumbents do not automatically own "trust" in AI agents

The conventional wisdom is that trust is an incumbent advantage. Khosla's counter is that incumbents with ad-driven models are structurally misaligned with consumers.

"Do you trust Facebook? Would you give them your credit card information?"

5. Operating Insights

Align the business model with the user, and say it explicitly

Khosla's advice for agent startups is to make incentive alignment a stated positioning, not an implicit one.

"Yeah. We're not selling you to advertisers. That's not our market. We're serving you."

Be explicit about risk assessment when making a high-stakes, non-core purchase, then default to learning

Khosla's approach to the Seahawks: examine known risks, avoid changing a functioning operation, and learn first.

"It's a risk that we looked at." / "I have no current plans to change anything about the team, including the coach, president, operation or Lumen Field. It all functions well." / "I know very little about running a team. I don't think I'll do anything but learn for a while."

Use proximity and personal conviction as a filter for opportunistic deals

"It was a combination of passion, interest, and the convenience of having something that's an hour-and-20-minute flight. I wouldn't buy a team in Philadelphia or Washington, D.C."

6. Overlooked Insights

Antitrust enforcement is soft, favoring negotiated settlements over litigation

This matters for deal-timing assumptions in M&A and exits.

"Dechert reports that U.S. antitrust reviews are taking less time, but doesn't take a position on whether that's thanks to increased efficiency or decreased scrutiny." / "Deloitte also finds that the Trump administration prefers negotiated settlements over litigation, noting that neither the DOJ nor FTC has filed suit yet in 2026 to stop a transaction."

Lease expiry in 2032 is a latent catalyst for the Seahawks' stadium and location question

Khosla declined to commit to keeping the team in Seattle long-term, and the stadium lease timing is the pressure point.

"I will never say never." / Primack's framing: "When that Lumen lease is up in 2032, the stadium will be around the age that other owners talk about renovations or new stadiums..."
